Tadalafil belongs to the group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) inhibitors, primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Erectile dysfunction is the inability to keep a hard and erect penis suitable for sexual activity. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called prostate enlargement, is the non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland.
Tadalafil contains ‘Tadalafil’, which works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis; this allows the blood to flow into the penis when the person is sexually excited. Thereby, it helps to treat erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil relaxes the bladder and prostate muscles, thereby reducing enlarged prostate symptoms such as difficulty in urination and urgent need to urinate.

Researchers from the University of Hong Kong studied data from 30 sites in China and found the cost of erectile dysfunction drugs (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra) can be as high as $4 billion per year in the United States.
While the data showed a 10 percent decrease in cost for Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, the study’s lead author, found the same trend with tadalafil, a more powerful erectile dysfunction drug. “The average cost of Viagra or Cialis is $6.5 billion in the United States,” he said.
While the study found a 15 percent decrease in cost for tadalafil, researchers say there is no way to know for sure if these drugs can be used effectively in treating erectile dysfunction.
They believe there is no single drug that is FDA-approved for treating erectile dysfunction, and that the drugs may not work as well without it.
“We have seen that the market for erectile dysfunction drugs, including Viagra and Cialis, is growing rapidly,” said Dr. Peter O’Brien, director of the University of Hong Kong’s Centre for the Study of Men and Women in Sexual Health and a professor of clinical pharmacy at Hong Kong’s Queen Mary University of Science and Technology. “We expect that with the increasing number of men taking erectile dysfunction medications, there will be more demand for these drugs.”
O’Brien says the study is “unprecedented.” The study, he said, was designed to look into “the potential effects of taking these drugs on erectile dysfunction, and whether the drugs can be used safely to treat this condition.”
In the new study, O’Brien said the drugs can only be taken if the doctor is willing to prescribe them.
In the United States, for example, men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, have a prescription for tadalafil, and they are able to take it without the need to visit a doctor to obtain a prescription. They also can get the drug for as little as a week.
The study was funded by Pfizer, Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that makes Viagra and Cialis. Viagra and Cialis, the two main ED drugs in the US market, are used to treat erectile dysfunction.
But there is no proof that these drugs can be effective in treating erectile dysfunction, and the drugs are not currently in a clinical trial.
Dr. Michael O’Brien, a professor of pharmacy at the University of California, Los Angeles, says the study “is the first to examine whether the use of these drugs can be safely used by men with ED.
“This is an important study because it demonstrates that the potential benefits of taking these drugs on ED are not only obvious, but also that men taking these drugs are more likely to get and maintain erections, which are the most significant signs of a man’s ED.”
In the study, the authors found that taking the drug for more than a month may help men with erectile dysfunction to get back to their sexual activity again.
The study is the first to look into the use of drugs like Viagra and Cialis in treating erectile dysfunction.
Peter O’Brien, a professor of pharmacy at the University of Hong Kong, said the findings “showed no significant difference in the effectiveness of these drugs in treating erectile dysfunction when taken for more than a month.”
In the study, the researchers found that men taking Viagra or Cialis had a significantly greater decrease in their sexual activity in the first 2 weeks of treatment.
1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.
3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain anticoagulants (blood pressure medications used to manage conditions like high blood pressure, heart failure, or a heart attack), leading to a drop in blood pressure (hypertension). This can affect thereek blood pressure drop, which may cause fainting. If you take Cialis with antihypertensive effects and side effects, consult your doctor before starting or stopping this medication.
Although there are no direct drug-food interactions, Cialis can affect the blood flow to the penis, increasing the risk of cardiovascular events. If using Cialis with PDE5 inhibitors, consulting a doctor is recommended to ensure that the medication is safe and effective. Here are the key antihypertensive effects and side effects:
